Full (Standard Double) Mattress
The full or double mattress, also known as a standard double mattress, is one of the oldest and most common mattress sizes. It has been around for centuries and has a rich history.
The origins of the full size mattress can be traced back to the early 19th century when people started to move away from sleeping on the floor or in bedrolls. The first full size mattresses were made with layers of straw, feathers, or horsehair and were typically quite firm. They were designed to be used with a separate box spring, which provided additional support and helped to distribute the weight of the sleeper more evenly.
During the 20th century, the full size mattress evolved to include new materials such as coil springs and foam. These materials provided greater comfort and support and helped to improve the overall quality of the mattress.
The full size mattress was, and still is, a popular choice for single sleepers and smaller bedrooms. It is also often used in guest rooms, dormitories, and other places where space is limited. Today it is still available, but it is not as common as it used to be, as people tend to prefer larger mattresses such as the queen size, which offers more space. For taller sleepers that don’t want to go up to a standard queen, consider a Full XL size mattress, which is the same width as a Full but as long as a queen.
Overall, the full size mattress, also known as the standard double, is a classic and practical option that has stood the test of time. It has been around for centuries and has a rich history. It’s a good choice for single sleepers or small bedrooms and it’s still available today.
